Group Dynamics Essay

Dynamics of a Teenage Group with Low Self Esteem

Teenagers with low self esteem formed a group to help cope with the problem they are facing. The group was formed and rules of behaviour were set to keep things simple, and to avoid controversy. This is the third session, and the group has established its purpose, which is, dealing with low self esteem among the members. The group is in its norming stage where interpersonal relations are characterized by cohesion, and the dynamics of the group members influence the relationship, the progress, the changes and the general relationship of all the members (Forsyth, 2010, p. 87).

The group is in the norming stage because members are beginning to share a common commitment to the purpose of the group. Each member is working towards the achievement of the goals set by the group. One of the members has shown natural leadership skills, and has so far been selected to lead the group. She appreciates differences in people and situations, and has shown the ability to adapt the leadership style to circumstances. The selected group leader is focusing on the continuity of the group, and has clarified the roles of each member. This has provided a workable and clear structure for the group to achieve its set goals.

As a problem solving group, individual role recognition is promising the achievement of the goals set by the group. The dynamics of my leadership style correspond with those of the selected group member. These dynamics include listening to the members and providing encouragements for their efforts towards gaining confidence in their lives (Forsyth, 2010, p. 245).

All the team members talk and listen to each other. No one dominates the conversation. When given an opportunity, each member shares her views, her experience with low self esteem, and the challenges faced in her daily life. The others listen without any interruptions. The group has shown incredible data flow between the members. The members share ideas and feelings related to low self-esteem, and they give feedback to one another (Hale, 2012).

Members’ interactions are energetic. The group has engaged in active acknowledgement of each member’s contributions in solving the group’s issues. Each member is willing to change her pre-conceived opinions on the facts presented by other members. The members are also actively asking questions of one another. The interaction has increased the level of trust among the group members, and this has contributed to the improvement of the group’s cohesion. Openness and sharing of information at a personal level have been facilitated by the energetic interaction the members are showing at this level (Hale, 2012).

The group members are connecting with one another directly. Initially, the connection was only witnessed with or through the team leader, but that is changing. The communication between members has created a bond that is intended to help in achieving strategic objectives of the group. The connection has erased the fear of inevitable breakup of the group in the future witnessed at this stage of the group (Haynes, 2012, p. 37).

At this level, the members are implementing the goal of biblical integration, which is helping individuals to think critically and biblically about every aspect of their lives. This has helped them in gaining a greater understanding of the nature of God, and how He has designed things to be. This has helped them in accepting their situation, and has encouraged them to work towards finding a solution to the problem of low self esteem (Hale, 2012).

So far, the group has recorded an improvement in each individual as they feel accepted and they are positive about many aspects of life. Confidence, although minimal can be detected in some of the members. Members appreciate each other and have avoided making fun of each other’s situation. Instead, they offer support to each other.
