Le Petit Prince and Coeur Brule Essay

French
literature tends to be rather dramatic that lyric. This is because most French authors have believed that an artist should not write purely to convey his moods and emotions. On the contrary, one should write about more general matters. However, in my paper I would like to talk about two magnificent pieces written by prominent French authors that are lyrical indeed. These two novels are: the Little Prince (Le Petit Prince), written by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, and the Burned Heart (Coeur Brule) by Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio. The goal of my paper is to show that both of the novels are targeted on the youth, even though being enjoyed by the grown-ups.

The Little Prince was written in 1942 while Antoine de Saint-Exupery was living in New York. The novel tells the story of an aviator whose plane crashed in Sahara. In he desert meets a young prince, who tells him about the planet he is from. His planet is very small, consisting only of three volcanoes, two of which are functioning, and inhabiting two living beings: the prince and his beloved rose. Though apparently a children’s book, The Little Prince makes several profound and idealistic points about life and human nature.

The narrator and the little prince become friends, they engage in lengthy conversation from which the reader can derive the essence of the novel. The little prince is a person of outstanding moral qualities and values. It is alien to him to lie, defame, to be cunning and to have a desire to hurt those around one. The main topics that are discussed in the book are: the danger of narrow-mindedness, the importance of learning through exploration, significance of responsibility and sincerity in relationships and the bitterness of solitude.

In my opinion the essence of the story is contained in several lines and situations that I would like to present lower. To begin with the novel points out that we, the people are very lonely, and our only salvation is to create ties with each other – to make each other more special. According to the author it is not enough to just have some ties, while it is vital to be engaged in devoting, warm relationship full of love and kindness. Exupery emphasizes that every person is special, however what makes him/her special is the love one has towards the. This portrayed in the book by the fact that even though visiting other planets and seeing that there are many roses, the little prince understands that “it is the time he has spent with his rose that makes his rose so important. What has to be remembered is that once engaging in a relationship we become responsible for the person close to us”. As it was proclaimed in the novel, “You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed”.

The novel called Coeur Brule, or the Burned Heart is considered to be the substantial and famous romantic novel written by Jean Marie Gustave Le Clezio. Though, it has to be said that this story is not romantic according to the standard understanding of romance. The author of the novel tells us about the story of a young woman who had lost her friends, position and degraded. We see her living on the margins of society, in southern France. She is originally from Latin America, she came to France in order to improve her life and achieve success. Though, she did not withstand the hardships of living in France and surrounded herself with baneful friends who encourage her drug abuse. Being manipulated by her boyfriend, she begins to sell her body and soon gets imprisoned for sexual exploitation.

When in prison a young woman loses hope for a better life, however she is not left alone. Her sister who she was not very much in touch with for a couple of months interferes and releases her. The second sister has followed a totally different path. She came to France, studied jurisdiction and became a judge. The sisters have nothing in common, due to the poles-apart differences of their lifestyles and convictions. Though, they have a common past – their childhood, when everything was much easier. The novel presents the hard life any women face when moving to the South of France from different countries and how not all of them manage to get out of the dump they find themselves in.

In my opinion, even though both of the novels, especially the one written by Jean Marie Gustave Le Clezio can be read at all the ages and can be understood differently with every round of rereading. Nonetheless, the novels should be particularly read by young people because these novels talk about the issues a young person faces early in the process of his/her formation. The novels talk about such important values as the family ties, the feeling of responsibility, and the risk of engaging into ruinous activities. Thus, it is very important that young people read these novels and derive the lessons they have to offer.
