Paper on Marriage and Divorce
People are created not to be alone. This is the statement that we hear beginning with Biblical story about Noah and his Ark. Is it truly so? We have a chance to choose depending on our own wants, needs and beliefs. It is not a universal statement, but if a person has a need to love somebody and care and if being together is better than staying alone- then why not. Each person is self-sufficient by its nature, and for happy life he doesn’t need another person. But we also have such feeling as unmercenary love that we want to share and make gift of, and that is why we are making couples. We are also striving to have children and want our children be loved by both parents, and that’s why we are coupling and getting married.

From the other side it is very difficult to find a person that would accept you the way you are and love you without trying to change your character and attitudes. As we hide our real natures behind masks of roles we are trying to perform, finding your half becomes even more complicated. We probably should start with finding peace with ourselves and only then thinking about finding someone else. But the paradox is that when you are in harmony with yourself you have nobody to look for, your love will find you without any efforts from your side.
What is marriage? It is defined as interpersonal relationships, which involve governmental, religious and social aspects, and supported with intimate and sexual contacts. Why do people getting married? Probably they are looking forward social and economic stability, desire to create a family unit, give birth to children, and want to make a public proclamation love. All those reasons seem not persuading to me, as there are a lot of other ways to reach all stated goals. I think that the only reason people should getting married is intimacy of souls, having the same perceptions and experiences to share, desire to be together without any reasons. So, in my understanding, institute of marriage is very controversial issue itself.
Cohabitation’s definition is more close to my understanding what true relationships should look like. It is defined as primarily emotional and also sexual relationships, which includes living together without any legal and religious sanctions. Why do people decide to live together? It may occur for such reasons, as desire to test compatibility and establish financial questions. People can just want to avoid divorce.
Marriage and cohabitation are social standards that have nothing to do with people’s attitudes to each other. If two persons love each other, it doesn’t matter to them to cohabitate or to get married, they can do whatever they want and what will be better for them. They always have a choice. It depends on their views, whether they are family-oriented or individualistic, and on what goals do they pursue at this very moment.
There can be a lot of argues towards marriage without cohabitation, or cohabitation without never getting married, but in fact the only thing that matters is two persons’ relationships and ways of understanding each other.
Everything is about social roles we are choosing for ourselves. Cohabitation presumes less responsibility and absence of divorce routine. You can see other person’s habits and ways of behavior in other environment and understand whether you really want to be together. Marriage presumes more responsibility not only for you but also for your partner and children, and all those duties should bring just happiness, as life is meaningless if you are not happy.
Speaking about negative relationship between cohabitation and marriage, it can be al least four reasons pro this connection, as studies show that cohabitation increases the chance that some day people will divorce. Most people who live together without getting married are frightened of permanent relationships; it can be easily exited with few responsibilities. Cohabitations usually do not last more then 5 years and end with separation. It is of course emotionally difficult for both cohabitants and for children if they had any. Marriages in this sense are better than cohabitation. Marriage presumes long-term relationships and adequate financial and emotional investments to it. Sexual relationships tend to be more faithful, even though there are no warrantees. Marriage is more secure for growing children and protects them from different kinds of abuses and emotional stresses.
So, it is only each couple’s choice whether to get married or just live together and check out their feelings, but each person should remember that true feelings do not need to be checked and be frightened something of.
