Sample Essay on Novel

The
background of a person can have an affect on the choices they make and the way they lead their life. In the cases of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Alexander Solzhenitsyn, their background affected the narrative techniques used in their novels. Each used very different narrative techniques, but each produced a novel that reached the public. In Marquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold, the structure of the novel was written as if it was a newspaper article, to give information of a specific event. In Solzhenitsyn’s One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich, the structure of the novel was written to clarify people, and let the public know about a specific time in history. Although both novels were written to help clarify a certain incident, the final result of both novels did not have the same affect because of the different narrative techniques used by the authors. However, this is what the authors intentions were when they wrote their novels. Each author, having a completely different background from the other, wrote their novel based on experiences in their lives.. Although both novel were fiction, the background of each author played a major role in each novel, and had a great affect on the narrative techniques used in the novels written by Marquez and Solzhenitsyn.

After the start of the war in Russia, Solzhenitsyn was imprisoned in a Russian gulag for disrespectful remarks about Stalin. This was the basis for his novel One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich. At the time, it was against the law to take pictures, write about, or say anything about the gulag, and this is why Solzhenitsyn wrote his novel. He wanted to inform the people of the lifestyles the prisoners went through, their daily routines. This is why it is written in such a unique way. The novel One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich, covers one day of a prisoner’s life, from morning to night. There are no chapters, no sections, no breaks. It is a 203 page novel, written straight through. Solzhenitsyn wrote this novel in hopes to clarify how awful the gulag truly was, to explain to the people what so many innocent people went through each day of their sentence. This is why One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich starts out before breakfast and goes though each part of the prisoner’s day. It is written in one day because each day of every prisoners life was the same, and this was the point that Solzhenitsyn was trying to prove. By using the narrative techniques that he did, Solzhenitsyn was able to show the readers what a person went through in the gulag. Since he was not able to actually show the torture of the gulag through pictures or drawings, he expressed it through a novel, a novel that illustrated the gulag just as well as a picture would have.

Chronicle of a Death Foretold, written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez was based on an actual murder. Although most of the details throughout the novel were fiction, the murder itself was based off of a murder that Gabriel Garcia Marquez experienced. In his own town, Marquez was a newspaper reporter. He wrote articles the way most articles are written, with facts and interviews, some articles clarify a specific event, some leaving questions at the end for the reader to answer for them self. This is the way in which Marquez wrote his novel. In the end, there were still many ideas to be clarified, many questions left unanswered. However, this is the narrative technique that Marquez used to clarify a specific event, yet leave the end a little confusing for the reader. The reason Marquez did this, was because it was how the people in his novel felt about the murder. Not all the questions had been answered and not everything was clarified. The people in the town where the murder had taken place, were confused, and this is how Marquez wanted to leave the reader. The background of Marquez played a major role in when he wrote Chronicle of a Death Foretold. He used the techniques he used everyday at his job to write his novel. When Marquez wrote his novel, he used a very different style of narrative technique, one that would usually not be considered for a novel. However, for Marquez, having the background he did, his narrative technique was perfect for the style of novel written.

The background of both Marquez and Solzhenitsyn played major roles in the novels they wrote. Their backgrounds influenced the narrative techniques used by both authors, and each book would have been a completely different style had their background not been what they were. The background of a person determines what kind of person you are going to be. A lot of the time, the background of a person can affect what type of decisions they make and what type of person they become. One thing can change a person’s background and can have a major affect on that person. One decision, one event, can have a huge impact on a person. For Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Alexander Solzhenitsyn, their background affected the type of narrative techniques used in their novels.

Both novels, Chronicle of a Death Foretold and One Day In The Lie Of Ivan Denisovich, had very unique narrative techniques, and both were based off the backgrounds of each author. However, the way these two books were written is very unique, and if either novel was written in any other way, it would not have come out as good. I believe that the reason people enjoy One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich, is because of the way it is written. It is easy to comprehend and easy to read, this was what Solzhenitsyn wanted when he wrote this novel. He wanted the public to clearly understand what he and so many others experienced. Chronicle of a Death Foretold was also a good book because of the way it was written and the narrative techniques used by Marquez. Many people believe that this book was not as easy to comprehend because of Marquez’s style of writing. I believe it was a very good book. I like the way Marquez left the end vague and unclear. I feel that it tied in very nicely with the rest of the book and made a very good conclusion for this novel. The backgrounds of these authors had a major influence on both novels, and greatly affected the narrative techniques used in each novel.
