Sebastian Bach, a composer of the Baroque Age, grew up in a musical family to become one of the greatest composers of all time. He was born on March 21, 1685, in Eisenach, Thuringen. At a young age he mastered the organ and violin, and was an excellent singer. Around this time both his parents passed away within a year of each other.
Fortunately, his older brother, Johann Christoph, took him in and continued his musical training. Along with his musical training Sebastian attended schools in Eisenach, Ohrdruf, and Luneburg.

At the age of fifteen in the St. Michaels School in Luneburg he secured his first position in the choir. During this time he traveled little. During one of his trips he found a permanent job as organist in Arnstadt. It was around this time Bach took an absence of leave for a month to go hear the great organist Dietrich Buxtehude. That month turned into five months and Bach decided to look for a new job. His new job was in Mulhausen during the year of 1706. That year he married his cousin Maria. In Mulhausen Bach was an organist in the Church of Saint Blasius. The next year he moved to Weimer and became an organist and concertmaster at the court of the Duke of Weimar. He stayed in Weimar for the next nine years. In Weimar he composed about thirty cantatas and also wrote organ and harpsichord works. Bach continued to work in music for a number of people.
Bach wrote all types of music. He wrote suites, trios, and sonatas for different types of instruments. He also wrote concertos for various instruments and orchestra. Some of his most famous are the six concerti grossi, who he composed for the Duke of Brandenburg in 1721. Just a year earlier his wife Maria died and he remarried Anna Magdalena. Bach had twenty offspring, ten died at infancy. Soon after the death of his wife Maria Bach began to look for a new position and finally took one in Leipzig. Bach spent the rest of his days in Leipzig. This is where he became organist and cantor at St. Thomas Church. He lived a happy life and enjoyed his contribution to music.
Bach passed away on July 28, 1750 and is considered as one of the greatest composers of all time. Bach brought polyphony to the late renaissance. He also achieved great heights in the art of fugue, choral polyphony, and organ music. With the death of Bach in 1750, music scholars marked the end of the baroque age.
