When freshmen students first arrive to college many of them are very surprised to see a great amount of general education courses they must take in order to graduate. They often find themselves wondering why someone, for example, who wants to be a manager, financier, or accountant, should study subjects that have nothing, or almost nothing, to do with the fields of their majors. This question is natural, and it really does seem unclear why you should study literature, history, psychology, philosophy, music, art, or any other subject outside of your major. In my short essay I will try to answer this question and will prove that studying humanities is not only useful but simply is essential for a person.

Most college students and their parents believe that the goal of a college or university is to provide a useful education that will lead to obtaining employment. Such attitude is innate because we all know that the job market today is competitive and very tentative. Thus, people are willing to invest time, money, and effort into education that will later help them achieve great accomplishments and succeed at the work places. Yes, we all need to study and then find a job that will support us and our future families, though college education and obtaining a career should not be only about struggling for survival. Some people argue that intelligence, goodness, chastity, and development of mind are much less significant today than specific job training. However, this is far from being true.
Even though all the stated above arguments are proper indeed, what is also true is that learning humanities, and not only learning some particular skills, also prepares a person to be valuable for employers. In fact, today the job market has changed drastically. While it used to be that workers worked for one company for their lifetime, today they should be prepared not to stay at one company doing the same job until retirement. Thus, the employees today should be broadminded, forward-thinking, and fast learning to match the rapid speed of developing technology. Moreover, businesses are looking for graduates who are creative, inventive, and adaptable enough to learn new skills; and the survival in today’s unstable job market depends upon the intellectual abilities, which only studying humanities offers. Thus, studying humanities makes students attractive to employers because they possess the skills necessary to adapt fast in a constantly changing workforce.
In conclusion it must be said that the modernized and capitalistic society we are living in today tends to emphasize people’s roles as producers and consumers of materialistic things. Consequently, it seems that our roles as simple humans, civilians and voters, neighbors and coworkers, partners and parents are simply ignored. Additional education in the field of humanities encourages and reminds students to consider their ultimate roles on this planet. Humanities broaden the minds of students, develop their critical thinking, and teach to appreciate life. Thus, studying humanities is vital for each and every student no matter if he or she is majoring in Finance, Biology, Mathematics or Engineering.
