on Segregation

If to speak about European countries, nowadays gender segregation is not so popular and widely spread. It considered to be noble, correct and fashionable in the previous centuries, when there was social gender segregation. It meant that firstly only men could get education, while women were like home animals having no rights to speak, to vote, to be socially demanded. Even when women became more independent, gender segregation was necessary, because psychological, physical and sexual education among men and women was quite different. It was possible at that time, but today it is not so typical for this society, as man and woman are equal and have the same rights. But there are still some educational establishments where gender segregation is accepted. These are the establishments with great history and traditions which are followed from year to year, from generation to generation.

But what should be said about countries where religion obliges gender segregation? Islam religion – Sharia is one of them. Sharia is the totality of regulating behavior norms for Muslims, it is their culture. For centuries they followed their religion and gender segregation was a rule for them. But today a lot of Muslims became more flexible and tender and find nothing negative in combined educational establishments, that is why there are a lot of debates about this question. Having read two articles, it becomes obvious that the struggle for religion is so ardent and zealous.

Religious principles are supported by the political acts. The first law that required gender segregation was formulated in 1996 and adopted in 2001. The second law that read about private educational establishments’ segregation was passed in 2000, but till today it is not realized because of a row of problems, which the country faces including construction and equipping of a great number of new vitally important buildings. Schools and universities can not pay for organization of separate computer and chemical laboratories, classrooms, libraries, canteens and so on. So, this is a struggle for equal facilities, equal quality of education among sexes. But whether is the division necessary? Men and women still visit the same cafes, the same shops all in all any public places. Moreover from year to year parents, including the members of the ruling clique send more frequently their lovely children abroad to co-ed schools. But at the same time the political views of conservative pro-segregationists and liberal anti-segregationists disaccord. The Members of Parliament support the gender segregation laws thrusting their rules on people and making them obey. ABQ Zawya Ltd cites the main motivations and views:

“It is against Islam for men and women to congregate on college campuses. MPs must keep segregation laws and furthermore they must require the laws to be enforced! ” said Islamist Khalid Abdulrahman” said Islamist Khalid Abdulrahman. “Sharia is what we base our lives on, nothing else, only Islam which is what all true Muslims want.” said Osama Bader.”

The opponents have another idea claiming that their rights and interests are infringed. ABQ Zawya Ltd comments:

“…we want a modern Kuwait that trusts its sons and daughters to be moral and just without paranoia… “We are a free society and as such, should have free choice to send our children to segregated schools or co-education schools. We do not need policing in these areas,” said Wasmiya Faisal. “…Islam is between me and my God not me and Parliament,” said Khalifa Ziyad…”

This dispute and discrepancy between the Members of Parliament and the people can be discharged from both sides, but the agreement will be reached only under the conditions of mutual cooperation, understanding and respect.

To my mind gender segregation has more disadvantages than advantages. Absence of socializing, cooperating between sex deepens greatly not only misunderstanding but also social inequality of rights among sexes in the Muslim world.

Moreover forbidden fruit is so sweet and that is why prohibition of intrasexual contacts is not the way out, because it will not protect the children and especially it will not make their life secure. Besides gender segregation affects people not only emotionally, but psychologically in general. Absence of simple rules of socializing, communication and attention will make the people reserved, unsociable, emotionally undevelloped and no doubt it will prevent from developing of socially demanded persons, useful members of the society.
