on Nursing:

Sometimes we do not fully understand the importance of healthcare workers. It can be said that healthcare workers and nurses in particular are the best, most helpful and loyal friends of patients. It is true that they get paid for their job. However, they show the care and concern for the patients that is supreme and extraordinary. With the rising costs of healthcare, physicians are spending less time with patients, and the role of nurses is shifting. Nowadays, they are not only supervisors but they are health educators, as well as those who provide direct care to the patients.

According to the 2006 research, today in the United States of America the healthcare depends on nurses like on nobody else. As stated in the report, one of every four medical workers is in fact a nurse (Lovell, 2006, p7). In an average American hospital a standard patient is attended by a nurse for 6.3 hours of every day. Moreover, those patients who are recovering from a surgery or those who need special care spend 7.8 hours a day with a nurse. It has also been proven that the level of nurse care affects patients’ recovery speed. Whilst spending time with a nurse and being constantly supervised by her leads to less regrettable outcomes (Lovell, 2006, p7). Yet, not only the nurse’s work consists of carrying after the patient’s physical state. Usually nurses are the ones next to patients when they are in need of guidance, friendly opinion or just company.

In fact, not everybody knows that the scope of nurses’ practices includes assessing patients, planning care and treatment strategies, delegating care to others, staff teaching, maintaining patient safety, making diagnoses, and cooperating with other health care professionals (Health Work Force Institute, 2006). Nowadays, nurses are gaining more independence at work. It enables them to fully show the capacity of their education, experience and expertise. So obviously, we, as patients, need nurses to cope with our illnesses both mentally and physically as well as make our stay at the hospital as pleasant and easy as possible.

It used to be that a profession of a nurse was rather popular within women. It was at times when people were more driven by humane and benevolent motives. During war times young girls used to personally come to enlistment offices in order to go to the field and work as nurses. However, the era of munificence and velour is over, it got replaced by the age of money-seeking and carving the way to the top. As a result, since past few years a decline is seen in the number of people taking up nursing as a career.

In my essay I would like to describe the causes along with the consequences that may be behind the day by day decreasing number of nurses. The primary task of this essay will be to list these various consequences and problems for the healthcare in the State Washington. The aspects concerning wages will be also specified below.

The reasons why there is a shortage of nurses experienced are the same all through the country. As stated by the senator of state Washington, the state is currently losing nurses because of low wages and often because of stress and overload of work. As a result, the level of healthcare given to patients decreases momentously (Murray). Many nurses are leaving health care because of high workplace demands, a lack of adequate support staff, and the increased use of overtime. Though, the main reason to leave the nursing career or not go into it at all, that is caused by the reasons stated above, is that there are better economic opportunities in fields other than nursing (Murray).

Nursing school leaders, federal and state governors, medical care administrators, and consumer officials groups are concerned with the matter and are taking actions. Under those circumstances, the only way out of the nurse scarcity is wage rise. The salaries are determined by the needs and abilities of a community, the work schedule, the training, expertise, and experience required. Though, today the nurses of different qualifications are needed so all of them are given pay rises.

Washington State Nursing Association as of January, 2007 required that Nurses on the wage scale depending on the length of their seniority should get a 4-7% wage increase across the boarder of the state (Washington State Nursing Association, 2007). According to the 2006 research Seattle sets the seventh place in the list of ten highest wages for hospital nurses (Lovell, 2006, p 11). Today the healthcare workers and nurses in particular in state Washington require higher wages even though today regular nurses all over the state make around $62,000 a year. Moreover, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the jobs of regular nurses to grow 23 percent by the year 2008 (Lovell, 2006, p. 12).

The government also had to remove the economic barriers to the nursing profession profession. Lately more resources for financial aid, such as grants, loans and scholarships for those desiring to get nursing education were provided by the federal government. Today special beneficent programs exist to employ members of miscellaneous, underrepresented groups into nursing. Under these circumstances it can be said that it has never been a better time to become a nurse (Bednash).

Healthcare workers do deserve the now given salary rise. Though, high labor costs have added pressure to hospitals that have already been straining with their budgets in State Washington. The hospitals are proclaiming a net loss of 1.54 billion dollars due to the rise of wages and other benefits for the workers (Murray). More than half of hospitals lost money last year, but as there is a nurse shortage there is no other option for the government.

The nursing shortage is definitely harmful for the economy. It breaks the balance between supply and demand, because as the wages rise, employers have less ability to hire, thus causing unemployment. Though, such a strong demand for nurses has enlarged the awareness of the vital role nurses play in our lives.
