In the early childhood Andy Warhol had chorea (his extremities were moving involuntary). The doctors supposed it was a complication of the scarlet fever. Also it caused skin pigmentation blotches. As he was an ailing child, he spent much time at home. The range of activities was not large in those times, so the future artist was drawing a lot, gathering pictures of celebrities around, and listening to the radio. Many years after, being a popular artist, filmmaker and producer he remembered that those childhood hobbies influenced immensely his personality growth and preferences formation.

Frida Kahlo was also suffering a lot in her life. When she was a young woman, she was severely injured in a bus accident. After that she had 35 surgeries during her entire life. Her pain was very strong and in order to find some relief, she started painting her self-portraits. It seems that it was weird but it was her way to survive. The other reason for that was her explanation – herself was a subject she knew the best.

Both Frida Kahlo and Andy Warhol were the children of the immigrants. Kahlo’s father was German, who moved to Mexico, the mother was of Spanish origin. The Warhol’s parents were immigrants from Slovakia.

Frida became an artist because of the accident. She wanted to be a doctor and made her way to become one out of 35 girls in 2000 students’ medical school. Andy discovered his talent early and went to the art school. He was doing commercial illustrations first, like designing shoes advertisement, Campbell’s tomato soup cans, which became a hit of the sixtieths.

Andy Warhol preached pop culture, while Frida Kahlo’s works were filled with Mexican folk art. Warhol was called the “Pope of Pop”, as he successfully used popular things for the artist’s palette. He art was realism, symbolism and surrealism. She said that she never painted her dreams, but her reality.

In 1968 Valerie Solanas attempted on Warhol’s life. A year before she appeared in his movie “I, a Man”. The reason for shooting was not explained completely and left some vague shade on the story. Andy Warhol never pressed charges against her, although he had slim chance to survive and spent two months in a hospital.

Frida Kahlo married Diego Rivera. She was 22, he was 42. He “infected” her with political ideas and persuaded her she had talent and that should continue painting. Their private life was very tumultuous: passion, verging on insanity, numerous affairs out of marriage. He cheated her with her younger sister, while she had lots of affairs with both men and women. They divorced but later married again.

Andy Warhol was supposed to be asexual but recently it was established he was a homosexual. His relationships are not known to public. His early paintings and some of his most popular films had a gay underground culture origin. Several were not published because of explicit contents.

Warhol shot 250 films; almost all of them were short, while the most popular film about Kahlo is “Frida”.

Frida Kahlo’s paintings are becoming more and more expensive, as there are not many of them and lots of art galleries want to have a piece of her work. Her “Roots” were sold for $5.62 million, which is a record for the Latin American art.

Nowadays the works of Frida Kahlo and Andy Warhol are often exhibited together as the masterpieces of the twentieth century in the best galleries of the world.
